With more and more employees onboarding remotely, it’s more important than ever to help them feel part of the team, no matter where they are located.

Here are four creative ways to engage employees when onboarding remotely that will help build camaraderie among your remote workers and improve new employee happiness.

1. Ask how they feel and what they need

This one might seem simple, but it can sometimes go overlooked. Everyone is going through different challenges during this time; whether it’s balancing work and kids, health challenges, or just feeling more isolated than normal.

Sometimes the best thing to do when a new employee joins is to simply ask how they feel throughout the onboarding process and what they need from your company during this time. Whether that’s helping with work-life balance or helping them socialize more with team members, sometimes it’s the little things that can make a world of difference. 

2. Send office supplies to help them set up a home office

When we ran a survey asking over 1,000 employees in the US what they wish their company would do to help during stay-at-home orders, one of the most popular responses was “help with office supplies.” We often forget how easy it is to go into an office and have everything we need to perform our daily tasks. Many employees who haven’t worked from home before don’t have the proper at-home set up and buying desks and chairs and WFH accessories can add-up quickly. Ensuring their basic IT equipment is delivered in time for their first day is also key to a successful onboarding.

We recommend asking new hires what their new WFH setup will be and if they need any help. It is so important to set them up for success on Day 1!

3. Send a welcome gift

4. Build a sense of community 

Building a community where communication is open and flowing while working remotely can be a challenge. A few ways to build a sense of community is by offering virtual coffee breaks, having daily virtual meetings within teams and bi-weekly company-wide virtual meetings, promoting collaboration and encouraging employees to learn about each other on a personal level with virtual social hours.

This allows people from across the organization to connect and get to know each other.
